Billings Farm Museum

One day, on a sunny, windy Wednesday, you could hear the sheep bleating, the chicks peeping, the cow mooing, the horses whinnying, and one more thing . . . . children asking questions!

“Sheep are used for wool and meat,” the expert said.  “We will be going into the sheep barn now.”

When we went into the barn, a child asked, “Who’s the big sheep?”

“Sven,” said another.

Then when I walked with two legs on the fence, we were allowed to pet the sheep, so I pet it.  It had hair neatly sheared off.  Mr. Davenport told me that he self-sheared himself.

Then we had to take a wagon ride.  I sat on the seat that was closest to the front.

Then we had to go to the cow barn.  One pooped and laid down right in it.  We got to see a cow named Blessing.  It was named after our teacher.

Then we had to go to the sheep barn again, but this time to see chicks.  The chicks were very soft.  We had to be in a line.  While I was waiting, I pet the sheep and looked at them.

Next, we had lunch and recess.  We went to a movie room next.  We weren’t going to watch a movie, but we got to do chores and we got to play with games that they would have played with in the olden days.

We next got to make butter.  I got to stir.  We also got to paint with stencils.

Rain, Rain, BOOM!

Rain, rain, BOOM!

Rain, rain, BOOM!

Rain, rain, BOOM!

The rain goes as fast as a lion’s mane.

Rain, rain, BOOM!

Raindrops are racing until they fall, so

Rain, rain, BOOM!

Rain, rain, BOOM!

Rain, . . . .rain,  . . . . boom,

Rain,  . . . . . . . . rain,  . . . . . . boom  . . . . . . .

Ah, I can get out of bed finally.

BBBOOOOOOMMM!!!!!!!!!!

Aaaaahhhhh!

Fluff Fluff and the Egg

One day a silkie (a chicken) was strolling home from church, and it sighted a glistening egg.  “Who owns this egg?” she pondered out loud.  “I will smuggle this to Mom.”

When she scooted rapidly home, she saw her mother rummaging through the house.  She said, “Is this the thing you are looking for?”

“Yes,” said her mom.  “Thank you!”

The next day she got a lifetime of sweet bread crumbs.  This story is demolishing!

White

When I stay still, I listen for white noises.

Newly born chicks, “Peep, peep, peep!”

God’s heavenly hosts singing, “Hallelujah!”

Fluffy snow gracefully hits the ground

While white chickadees flutter around.

When I look out of the window, I look for white things.  Shimmering light from God above in Heaven,

Silkies white as snow,

White gentlemanly snowmen finding snowwomen.

When I have lunch, I try to remember some tastes!

Tasty white milk,

Scrumptious white chocolate ready to be eaten,

Sugar baked in hot chocolate.

When I have the chance to, I remember white smells.

Milk that is very smelly,

The cute smell of white chicks,

White ashes produce smoke.

When I have the chance to, I feel white.

The white of cute silkies,

White, drifting snow, “Brrrr.”

White is the color of electricity.  “Ow!”

White is fun.

Genius Hour Update

I am going to be having a chicken visit our class in a box with some eggs in an egg carton. If you have dust allergies, just e-mail Miss Blessing and she will find a way.) I will be telling some facts about chickens, like they are not chickens when they are younger than a year old. They are still chicks.  Hooray for Genius Hour!

If I Were With Lewis and Clark

Wow! Ocean in view! Land ho! We’re in the Pacific Ocean. Land ho! Land ho! Ocean in view! Oh, the joy! Wow! Sand, real sand. In two years I have never seen such glorious sand and glorious sea water! After two years of just seeing rivers and trees, here it is! Oh, the joy!

Burning Bush

noah-plant3

My best history is Moses talking with God.  You guessed it!  I am the burning bush!

I have green leaves in the spring and summer.  Instead of green leaves in the fall and the winter . . . red leaves!  I have red seeds in part of fall and winter and summer, but instead of red seeds in part of fall and winter, I have orange seeds.

Brrr.  I am naked in the winter and part of fall.  No leaves right now.  I guess I have to leave.  Get it?  Ha ha!

I am back!  Remember, I am the burning bush!  I have beautiful growing spring leaves.  No seeds yet though.  At least I don’t have to be chopped down like that ash yesterday.  (Sigh.)  My wings don’t show as well.  Man!  What a cold morning for a very nice day.  I miss the warmth.  At least it is a very, very nice day.

Well, I must be leaving!  Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha . . . . .

Fact Attack

Did I learn on our Lewis and Clark Day at Profile Falls?  Yes!

I learned that Lewis and Clark probably lost their shoes in the mud a lot!

I learned that there can be invertebrates even in the water!

I learned that you can thank the Lord even in music!

I learned that the rings of a tree mean (or signify) how old it is and that in the rings of the tree are little straws.  In the summer, they are big, and in the winter they are small.  In a leaf, there is red all along.  In the winter and fall, the green withers and red appears.

I learned that Lewis got shot in the britches.

I learned that you should be careful around a beaver lodge.

William probably was a good journalist.

The osprey uses its big talons to catch nice big fish to eat.  There are a lot of animals that get hit by cars, so we need to be praying that the other animals will know that the road is very dangerous.

I learned that Lewis and Clark must have gotten used to smoked meat.  They even ate candles when they were crossing the Rockies in the winter.  I really loved the squirrel meat!  It tasted like barbecued chicken.

Wow!  This day was a long day when we were like Lewis and Clark, except they took over two years for their expedition.

The Famous Silkie

There was once a Silkie who wanted to see the world.  She set off one night, and said to Mr. Silkie, “Come with me, please.  I’m going to see the world.”

“Oh, yes!” crowed Mr. Silkie.  “I’ve wanted to leave this coop for years!”

“Thank you, sir,” said Grace.  (Her name was Grace.)

The next day something terrible happened.  Mr. Silkie was walking to Grace’s when a fisher cat came and took him.  The fisher cat rarely eats chickens.  She brings them and puts them in a cell.  The fisher cat’s name was Arra Sing.

Grace set out and found Arra Sing and pecked her and defeated her.  Mr. Silkie had been beaten up badly.  Grae treated his wounds, and they were on their way.

Years passed, and they went to Chicago.  They happened to find a chicken auction.  They traded and got more Silkies, and they were on their way again.

They found New York and got some more Silkies on their team.

Once they were surrounded by foxes.  Mr. Silkie captured them and made them say where a plane was.  The Silkies flew across the ocean and found Russia.  They got some more teammates for the Silkie team.  Together they went to Europe and found more Silkies.  They went to a boat and crossed the ocean to Greenland and lived there for a long time.

Splat!  Splat!

“I can’t go another inch,” said Grace.

“Don’t worry.  We’ll get to the goal soon.  Soon!” said Mr. Silkie.

“You call that soon?  It’ll probably take another two years!  Where are we anyway?” asked the Silkies.

“Mr. Silkie, you’re the wisest one in the team.  Where are we?” asked Grace.

“I don’t know, for crying out loud!  We’re lost!”

“What should we do?”

“I don’t know!  Wait a second.  Look!  Our tracks!  Let’s follow them.  I’m going home,” said Mr. Silkie.

“Me too,” said Grace.

“We don’t like our owners.  We’re coming with you,” said all the Silkie team.  “Race you to the boat!”

Splat, splat, splat, splat, splat!  Splat, splat, splat, splat, splat!

“I won,” said Grace.

“Get on,” said Mr. Silkie.

“NO!!!!!  It’s gone!”

“Look, they’re turning around.  Hop on, Silkies,” said the conductor of the ship.

“We’re going,” said Mr. Silkie.

“Go,” said the captain of the ship.

Years passed, and they were off the boat.

“Look!  Our coop!” said Mr. Silkie.  “Gross!  It’s Arra Sing’s skeleton in the coop.”

“We’re in the coop!  Hi, ho, the dario, we’re in the coop!” yelled all the Silkies.

“Hooray!” said Mr. Silkie.

So from that day on, Grace and the other Silkies said to themselves, “We’ll never leave our coop again.”

And that’s the story of Grace the Silkie.
